TACA Airlines

The flag-carrier of El Salvador, TACA Airlines, is comprised of five regional carriers. The airline has two hubs: El Salvador’s Comalapa International Airport and Lima, Peru’s Jorge Chavez International Airport (until May 2013, its third hub was for its subsidiary, LACSA Airlines, in San Jose, Costa Rica.) Its subsidiaries are: Aviateca, Lacsa, TACA Peru, TACA Regional, Islea, La Costena and Sansa.

Seating Options

Depending on TACA carrier size and route, there are two classes on most TACA airlines, Economy and Business. The former enjoys standard services while the latter, which includes LifeMiles Elite (Gold and Diamond) and Gold Star Alliance members, gets priority check-in, increased baggage allowances, airport lounge access and greater meal and beverage inclusions.

Checking In

Choose from three convenient methods of checking in:
  1. Airport Check-in: the traditional form of checking in.
  2. Electronic Kiosk Check-in: look for Avianca and TACA Self-Service Kiosks at your gate.
  3. Online Check-in: once you’ve got your electronic ticket, you may check-in in the comfort of your own home using the Internet. Check in up to 24 hours to one hour before your departure.

Carry-On Baggage
On all routes, passengers are allowed one piece of carry-on baggage weighing up to 10 kg and length x width x height not exceeding 115 cm. There are measuring boxes at the airport counter where you can determine if your carry-on baggage falls within these restrictions. In addition to the one carry-on piece, items like purses, collapsible baby strollers, cameras and laptops are permitted. Please note flights to and from the USA tend to be stricter with additional hand baggage.

Checked Baggage
Economy class passengers are permitted a maximum weight of 23 kgs and length x width x height not exceeding 157 cm.

Business class passengers are permitted a maximum weight of 32 kgs and length x width x height not exceeding 157 cm.
Special Baggage
Items deemed special baggage are not in addition to baggage allowance, like sporting equipment and musical instruments, while items like orthopedic devices and baby necessities are. The TACA website has a broad list of individual special baggage restrictions.
Alliances, Clubs & Lounges
TACA Airlines is a member of the Star Alliance. It became a member in June 2012 and along with Avianca and Copa Airlines, was the first Latin American carrier to enter into the Star Alliance. TACA’s top tier flyers are allowed access to Star Alliance lounges worldwide.
TACA operates VIP lounges at select international airports, available to passengers with premium Avianca or TACA airfare tickets or LifeMiles Elite members.

The Last Word
TACA originally stood for Transportes Areos Centroamericanos (Central American Air Transport) and while it retains the same acronym, it now stands for Transportes Areos del Continente Americano (Air Transport of the American Continent) since its expansion beyond Central America to North and South America and the Caribbean.
