Spring Skiing Holidays You Can’t Miss!
March 25th, 2009 by Gregg TilstonTwo Fridays ago I shouted out ‘I am outta’ here, see ya’ bye, time for a holiday, gone skiing as they say’.
Pardon any typos but I’m all giddy as I just returned from a vacation chock full of festivities, relaxing and spring skiing in Killington, Vermont. Over the years I’ve been fortunate enough to ski late, late into the season in British Columbia, Colorado, Vermont, Quebec, and right here at home in Ontario; snow as heavy as mashed potatoes, après activities after an incredible day of working those skis, and the sun giving you that ‘skier’s tan’ only your friends can appreciate (and snicker at).
With this inspiration we asked the global consultants at Flight Centre to come up with their favourite spring skiing vacation destinations.
Looking for a spring skiing holiday that mixes skiing, live music, and enough parties to fill your boots? Then you need to hit Whistler Blackcomb and the Telus World Ski and Snowboard Festival. This annual event includes professional ski and snowboard competitions and demonstrations. How about boasting to your friends that you rode the PEAK 2 PEAK gondola in its first season and skied 2 different mountains – all before lunch.
Known to many as A-Basin, Arapahoe is not for the faint of heart. Nestled among well known resorts like Copper Mountain, Keystone, and Breckenridge, this mountain peak out at 13 050 feet and has enough black and double black diamonds to keep you busy for weeks. Take it from me, do not miss traversing over, hiking up and hitting the famous East Wall – want proof (not my video but when I saw this it gave me goosebumps! Seriously, I just got them again)
Too late to book time off at work for spring skiing – no problem; enjoy early summer skiing because A-Basin is consistently open well into June.
How about some spring skiing in October – New Zealand style. An international holiday destination, New Zealand boasts over 25 ski resorts and a large number of heliski operators. New Zealand skiing has views that are said to be second to none; so remarkable I can only guess that’s why they named one resort The Remarkables.
But you don’t have to wait until October because most resorts open mid to late June. Ok, I have a new goal in life – October to June at Arapahoe Basin, June to October in New Zealand… WOW!
So when was the last time you slathered on the Bain De Soleil and hit the slopes for some great spring skiing?
We have highlighted East Wall, Arapahoe Basin, Colorado in today’s map below.
