Egypt in 10 days with On the Go Tours!

November 10th, 2009 by Yolande Campea

Flight Centre’s Yolande Campea travels to Egypt and blogs about her trip on an On the Go Tour. Yolande writes about incredible vacation adventures like riding a camel from the Pyramids to the Sphinx, visiting the Temple of Luxor, and experiencing the Valley of the Kings and the Valley of the Queens.

I’m going to start off by saying I love Egypt! Upon arriving I was greeted by the smiling face of one of our tour guides, Sam from On the Go Tours. It’s a moment of relief as there is no worse feeling than walking off an airplane alone and not being able to speak the language. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve done my fair share of traveling, but it’s comforting to know someone was there to take me to the hotel with a pool and AC.

Our first night was in Giza where we ate at this great restaurant which had an amazing view of the pyramids across the street. All I kept thinking was: Am I really here? Is this a dream? I pinched myself several times and I knew I was in Egypt and it’s beautiful!

My trip was full of highlights from riding a camel from the Pyramids to the Sphinx, taking an overnight train from Cairo to Luxor, taking an overnight bus from Luxor to Dahab (make sure you pack a blanket – it does get cold), to ATV’ing in Dahab. I also had the opportunity to scuba dive in the Red Sea and climb Mt. Sinai at midnight so I could watch the most amazing sunrise. Where else would I be able to do all that in 10 days?

We also did the tourist attractions and with the help of Sheriff, our On the Go tour guide, it was also educational. In Luxor we saw the Temple of Luxor at night and you can’t even imagine how beautiful it is at night, plus not as hot. The Valley of the Kings and Valley of the Queens was amazing, but during the day it’s very HOT.

I do have a few recommendations, make sure you can see Abu Simbel; it’s worth the flight/bus ride over. Also Egypt is a Muslim country so I suggest woman pack T-shirts that cover the shoulders and cropped pants or skirts that cover your knees when visiting the monuments, but at any other time tank tops and shorts are fine. During the day it can reach a hot 30 degrees or higher, and at night it cools off to a cool 15 – 20 degrees with a breeze off the Red Sea. So I suggest you bring a sweater or light jacket for the evenings.

It was one of my best vacations ever and I don’t have any issues recommending Egypt to anyone!

Giza, Egypt is highlighted on the Flight Centre travel map.

What would a trip like this cost per person? My 20 year old son and I are wanting to take a trip just like this.

My wife and I are aiming for a trip to Egypt in April and are intrigued by On The Go's King Ramses Tour (13 days, which includes everything you experienced in November).
My question is what kind of travel does On the Go provide?
By this I mean we are both professionals in our late 40s and are beyond budget trips. While we want to get up close and personal to the culture we also don't want to rough it. Of what standard are the hotels (names?) and restaurants and how much free time is there is to explore (or is it generally not recommended)?
If you feel it's a little down market, do have other suggestions?

    Hi James,

Thank you for your comment on my blog. I would not really consider On the Go tour a budget tour, but there will be a mix of people traveling from 19 to 50+.

There is an overnight train from Cairo to Aswan that I suggest you upgrade to the sleeper cabin, it's worth the extra. There is also a bus ride from Luxor to Dahab, it's not a bad bus ride, but make sure you bring a light blanket it does get cold. The other upgrade I would strongly recommend would be the 5* cruise instead of the felucca, as you would be really roughing it there.

The hotels used on the tour are all Oasis properties that are very clean, and are rated as a 4*. The hotels also are also in great locations that if you wanted to do things on your own your could. There is free time, but after a day of walking through the monuments, in that hot heat, you will probably just want to sit in the pool and relax.

If you would like more information please feel free to contact me at the Bonnie Doon Location. I'd be more than happy to talk to you about my trip, and what you should expect on yours.

Hope to hear from you soon,

    Yolande
