Sunrise, Sunset… Sunrise, Sunset
May 13th, 2009 by Gregg Tilston
I was sent this picture by a friend, Aaron Adams, who took it from the balcony of his apartment and I was immediately struck by the beauty of my hometown, Toronto, waking up to the day. It got me thinking about favourite sunrises and sunsets I’ve experienced while on my vacations and work travels. I mentioned what I was thinking to Dave – my Flight Centre roomie in the Bahamas who caught the sunrise while on a run (while I slept soundly). Dave immediately suggested his favourite location for a sunset, hands-down, is Rick’s Café, Negril, Jamaica. So, off I go to grab my fiddle, head to the roof and blog about two of my favourite locations for sunrises and sunsets.
Grand Canyon
What struck me as odd when I hiked the Grand Canyon was I found myself going to bed really early (probably due to exhaustion) and waking up in the wee hours. I can honestly say I have never seen so many sunrises that many days in a row and probably the most spectacular was the sunrise experienced at Bright Angel (campground at the bottom of the canyon). It wasn’t the actual view of the sun rising as much as it was the incredible colours (pinks and greens and reds – hey, kind of like the picture to the left) of the sun reflecting off the various Canyon walls; it truly was a sight to behold each morning. Day four, our final ascent, found us waking up in Indian Gardens to the sun rising and beaming back upon us off the South Rim. It was truly a euphoric experience!
Los Cabos
Los Cabos, Mexico is located at the southernmost tip of the Baja Peninsula where the Pacific Ocean meets the Sea of Cortez (aka the Gulf of California). I can tell you this makes for some spectacular views including sitting on a patio and enjoying a 360 degree view of both bodies of water. Probably the most famou
s landmark of Los Cabos is El Arco (the arch) which has been the setting of many a romantic sunset boat cruise. My favourite place to experience the Baja sun setting is on the patio of Sunset Da Mona Lisa (formerly Da Giorgio). If you find yourself in Los Cabos make sure you get to Sunset Da Mona Lisa early enough to sit back, relax, and enjoy a delicious meal while watching the sky transform in technicolour as the sun sets in the distance.
So what incredible sunsets or sunrises have you experienced? We would love to include them in a future blog post.
We have highlighted El Arco, Los Cabos, Mexico on the Flight Centre travel map.
