Andrea Freed travels to Winnipeg and returns with another Flight Centre guest blog post. Andrea shares some holiday and vacation tips with 3 ‘must dos’ when in the Peg. Take it away Andrea -

The Winnipeg airport always brings a smile to my face. It’s teeny tiny and you can go from plane to leaving the airport with luggage in hand in a matter of minutes. No matter how cold it gets, and I am NOT a fan of winter, the sun is almost always shining and the skies are almost always blue.

Often people give me some sort of look and make fun of me when they find out ‘The Peg’ is my hometown. However just as often I hear that Winnipeg breeds some good ones (yours truly included) and everyone loves a ‘Pegger’. We really are “Friendly Manitoba” as our license plates once stated.

By the way, did you know that Winnipeg is almost the exact centre of North America?! Anyway, if you ever find yourself in friendly Manitoba here are some must sees, must dos, and must eats.

The Forks
The Forks is where the Red and Assiniboine rivers meet with over six thousand years of history and known as the gateway to the Canadian west! There’s lots of great shopping, dining, and activities complete with a state of the art skateboard park. The Assiniboine Riverwalk is awesome spring, summer, and fall! This truly is Winnipeg’s number one tourist attraction!!

C Kelekis
Since 1931, Winnipeggers have enjoyed C Kelekis. This north end diner is equally known for its hot dogs, burgers and shoestring fries as its wall of fame; pictures of visitors ranging from Pierre Elliot Trudeau to Bobby Hull. People who have left the peg make it a must stop when back in town! Enjoy!

St. Boniface
The center of French culture in Manitoba, St. Boniface is the largest francophone community in western Canada. French is seen and heard everywhere and the food is amazing. St. Boniface is home to western Canada’s first hospital, the ruins of the magnificent Saint Boniface Cathedral, and the site of the winter event – Festival du Voyageur. You should really check St. Boniface out!!

So where are your favourite places to visit when in Winnipeg?

The Forks in Winnipeg, Manitoba are highlighted on the Flight Centre map.

I love Winnipeg! As you pointed out, definitely preferable as a three-season city, but Grand Beach was once voted (by Playboy Magazine!) one of the top ten beaches in the WORLD…

Thanx for the comment Janice! Stay tuned for more beach & cottage info in part two… coming soon …
