To the theme of Candace’s exciting upcoming Mexico holiday and imminent winter season, it may be a good time to highlight a couple attractions and popular activities any traveler might encounter or look to experience while in this eclectic country. Although we aren’t prepared to explain why one destination is ranked higher than another, what better way to look at the best places in Mexico than a Top Ten List? Subjective, ignorant, and passionate – let the arguments begin!
10.) Chichen Itza
It’s a day trip in from Cancun/Mayan Riviera however; it’s obviously completely worth every moment. Voted into the New 7 Wonders of the World, Chichen Itza is an incredible site of ancient glory from the Mayan civilization.
9.) Ixtapa / Zihuatanejo
Next to Cancun and Puerto Vallarta, it is the next most visited destination in Mexico so for that it has to be on our list. This up and coming resort town is gaining popularity for its tranquil bay and a general more reclusive experience in comparison to the louder and busier beaches in the country.
8.) Acapulco
Located also on the Pacific side, south of Ixtapa, is another popular resort destination; Acapulco. With great scuba diving and snorkeling opportunities as well as a picturesque bay area, Acapulco is becoming a rival for the popular and often over-crowded, Cancun.
7.) Cozumel
Situated off the coast from the Yucatan, the island of Cozumel, Mexico is known to many scuba-divers across the world. Cozumel is a popular cruising port and has the most coral reefs in the country, making it a bona fide island devoted to tourism.
6.) Huatulco
The bays of Huatulco, known originally for its coffee plantations, are now famed with the reputation of the authentic Mexico resort town. Small, picturesque and light on the crowds Huatulco is your unexpected vacation spot where you might find yourself visiting annually.
5.) Puerto Vallarta
Next to Cancun, Puerto Vallarta is the most visited destination in Mexico. There are many distinguishing features this port town possesses such as its colonial architecture, popular time-share locations and its thriving gay-friendly community. This, all apart from Puerto Vallarta’s top-notch resorts and fantastic bay landscape is of course why it is always at the top of mind for many vacationers.
4.) Cabo San Lucas (Los Cabos)
Located on the tip of the Baja California Peninsula, Los Cabos is becoming widely known as a high-end resort town in Mexico. The Land’s End arch rock formation at the very tip of the coast is the face of this majestic destination filled with more than just 5-star resorts and night life.
3.) Cancun
For reasons that cannot be explained through words but only through a pile of drinks, banana boats, endless hours of sun-tanning and snorkeling – this destination is not only the most recognizable but it is with a lack of a better term, the Party Place of Mexico!
2.) Riviera Maya
At the cornerstone of Mexico’s successful tourism industry lies this destination in the coastal line of the Yucatan. Commonly known as the ‘Mayan Riviera’, Riviera Maya has everything a family, couples, singles getaway one would seek: top-notch shopping in the Playa Del Carmen, 5-star resorts and palaces all along the endless beach line, scuba-diving and snorkeling and – oh yeah, there’s that ancient architectural wonder of the world, the Chichen Itza, just a quick 3 hour ride away.
1.) Mexico City
By far the most interesting, eclectic, entertaining and perhaps adventurous destination is the capital, Mexico City. The most populated city in the country and the continent for that matter has more to do than there is space to list on this blog posting from the great downtown market shopping to sitting in an audience of over 50,000 watching a wrestling match. If you are traveling on Mexicana Airlines and connecting through or have a stopover in Mexico City, take the opportunity to visit this incredible city for a day or two.
Riviera Maya, Mexico is highlighted on the Flight Centre travel map.
