A Wild West Vacation with Intrepid TravelJune 4th, 2012 by Flight Centre Staff
Many Canadian travellers find themselves flying to destinations half way around the world, in search of adventure. The truth is, adventure can be found a lot closer to home, and still be exciting and unique. Our Flightie Melissa recently returned from an amazing trip with Intrepid Travel exploring the USA, and shares her adventure of a lifetime:
I couldn’t wait to get started on my Suntrek tour with Intrepid Travel. I was ready to escape Canada and go bask in the desert heat for a while. Starting, of course, with Vegas.
After spending the first night in Vegas (and doing all things Vegas, but as you know, those details stay there) we headed out to Utah and Zion National park. This has got to be one of the most beautiful places to hike, and there are many different trails that you can explore, which vary from an easy walk to strenuous climbs. We camped at the foot of a mountain on our second night. From there we headed through Bryce Canyon on the way to Paria Canyon Ranch for some amazing BBQ and horseback riding. We then headed a little further south to Navajo land and Monument Valley.
This was an incredible experience driving around on the back of a jeep in Monument Valley with our fantastic guide Carlos who told us about the Navajo people and sang us some beautiful Navajo songs. We had dinner as the sun set in the middle of monument valley with nothing but the fire and our flashlights for heat and light. That night we slept in an authentic Navajo Hogan, which is a small hut made of wood and dirt, or you could chose to sleep out under the stars. After a morning sunrise tour we left the Navajo people and headed into Arizona and to the Grand Canyon where we spend 2 nights in a log cabin with plenty of time to hike, or bike around the Grand Canyon. For anyone who has not seen the Grand Canyon, pictures do not do this place justice.
After our time in the Grand Canyon we head back to Las Vegas which included a short stop in historic route 66 where you can grab an authentic rootbeer float or tasty sweet potato fries. We ended our tour with a bang which included a party bus ride on the Las Vega strip with stops at the Las Vegas sign, “old Vegas” where you can experience Freemont street and the Queen Light show while people zip-line above your heads.
That was my Wild West Vacation! Plenty of adventure and only a 4 ½ hour flight from Toronto. So the next time you are thinking about heading to Australia or New Zealand and find your purse strings are being stretched a little too far, I hope you will look into an Intrepid trip in the US. You won’t regret it!
