Travel Tip - Frequent Flyer Programs

One of the most important things you can do to maximize your mileage earning potential is to choose one frequent flyer program and stick with it - especially when you're first getting started. With most programs the benefits keep increasing as you give them more business. Even if you don't fly a lot, today's programs also offer benefits above and beyond just travel. You can earn miles for all sorts of expenses - hotel stays, rental cars, credit card purchases or just for shopping at certain stores. And you can often use your travel points on non-travel related purchases. When it comes to frequent flyer programs most of the larger airlines have similar policies on usage. Miles don't expire but there must be some activity in your account once every three years. The airlines can change their mileage expiration policies so keep up to date with current guidelines. Have a great trip.

In a Nutshell:

  • When first starting pick one program and stick with it to maximize miles
  • Today's programs don't require you to travel a lot; many non travel partners
  • Most programs require some activity every 3 years so keep an eye on account
