Trans-Siberian Railway

Considered one of the greatest train journeys in the world, the Trans-Siberian Railway runs for 9,300km through Russia connecting Moscow to the far eastern port town of Vladivostok.

It is longer than the Great Wall of China, taking you through six time zones and a range of terrain from forest to mountain to desert to steppe. If you were to travel the entire distance with no stops it would take about seven days straight. Of course you want to experience everything along the way so it is recommended to travel the railway between 10 - 14 days.

The biggest attraction on this route is Lake Baikal. This UNESCO World Heritage site is a 25 million-year-old pre-historic lake which contains 20% of all fresh running water on the planet. During the winter you may see Russians drive their cars across the lake as it can freeze to depths of 80 metres.

Other popular stops include Ekaterinburg, Tomsk & Khabarosvsk. Ekaterinburg is located in central Russia. It has a dramatic history from the Mafia in the 1990s and the execution of Tsar Nicholas II and his family in 1918. The moderate university town of Tomsk, while not on the main Trans-Siberian line, is a simple "detour" well worth doing from Novosibirsk. It is considered one of the treasures within the Siberia area and is famed for its stunning wooden architecture. Khabarosvsk, located on the Amur River which bounds Russia and China, is filled with tree-lined streets, square and fountains, 19th-century brick building, Japanese pagodas and real sushi which is imported to serve frequent Japanese business travellers.

Travelling the Trans-Siberian Railway is more than just a mode of transport. Before you know it you will have made friends with your fellow Russian passengers who are keen to get to know the foreigners who embark on this epic train journey.

There is so much to see on the Trans-Siberian and with Russian visa travel requirements it is important to plan ahead. So contact Flight Centre today to plan the trip of a lifetime at 1 866 317 4794.
