New York City can be many things to many people but if you're looking for a weekend getaway, it's the perfect choice. While 3 days in New York doesn't sound like a lot of time, one can get a great taste of what this city has to offer by taking the time to plan their trip. Here is a sample itinerary to give you an idea of just some of the many things to do while exploring this great city.
Arrive Friday morning and check into your Manhattan hotel. Hit a neighbourhood sidewalk caf and enjoy a pastry and latte while taking in the sights and sounds of your new home for the coming days. Head to the Empire State Building, the tallest building in the city for its renowned and spectacular views. Make your way to Rockefeller Centre and see the homes of Radio City Music Hall, NBC and the Today Show. If visiting in the winter months, don't forget to look for the Rockefeller Centre Christmas Tree and go for a skate. When your tummy calls for an afternoon meal, head north towards Central Park, the most visited park in the US, and enjoy a picnic while admiring the wonderful gardens of this national landmark. Spend the rest of your afternoon shopping at the specialty boutiques along 5th and Madison Aves and the trendy shops in SoHo that make NYC one of the world's top shopping destinations. As the evening approaches, it's time to dine at one of the many gourmet restaurants that grace the city streets. As a rule of thumb, try avoiding areas heavily filled with tourists and stick with the local favourites to get the best quality and best value for money. Now it's time to catch one of the amazing theatre shows lighting up the stages of Broadway. After the show, take a stroll to nearby Time's Square - nothing defines excitement quite like the bright lights of this world famous tourist spot.
Find a local diner and enjoy a hearty breakfast before going to Grand Central Terminal, commonly referred to as 'Grand Central Station.' One of the busiest train stations in the world, it serves nearly 200,000 commuters every day. Grand Central is also home to restaurants and some of the most beautiful architecture in the city. From there, take the subway toward the Financial District in Lower Manhattan and take a stroll along Wall Street. When your stomach begins to grumble, grab a slice of famous New York Style Cheese Pizza and stop in Chinatown to enjoy some shopping on Canal Street. If you're in the mood for some culture, visit one of the many renown museums including the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), the National Design Museum (Smithsonian Institution) and the Guggenheim. By now you'll be famished so enjoy dinner at one of the many supper clubs in the city and mingle with the locals as you dance the night away at one of New York's popular nightclubs.
Nothing says Sunday in New York, quite like enjoying a brunch of Mimosas and Eggs Benny at one of the many restaurants around town. Take a trip down to the waterfront and jump on the free Staten Island Ferry from Battery Park City, for a great view of the harbour, skyline and, of course, the Statue of Liberty.
Although a weekend isn't enough time to see everything this magnificent destination has to offer, it's definitely enough to wet your appetite to return to the 'Big Apple.' Let a Flight Centre travel consultant help you plan the perfect itinerary by calling 1 866 317 4794.
