Some describe it as a bucket-list item, one of the things you simply must do in your lifetime. You don't know how true that is until you step onboard the Rocky Mountaineer. Carried off in the lap of luxury on a relaxing journey of superior service and jaw-dropping scenery through beautiful British Columbia and the famous Rocky Mountains of Canada, it's an experience beyond compare.
Departing the picturesque coastal city of Vancouver, we gaze around the glass-domed coach of GoldLeaf Service noticing couples of all ages from countries all over the world. While the train pulls away from the station, everyone is thrilled and excited as they look about at the people they will soon share this fantastic voyage with. The funny and charming onboard attendants double as tour guides, regaling us with interesting snippets of folklore and facts about the landmarks and sights we are about to see, all while preparing the dining room for breakfast and serving fresh coffee and tea.
The menu is impressive with a collection of classic Western Canadian dishes and to think, they cook this delectable dish of smoked Pacific salmon, scrambled eggs, caviar and creme fraiche in a small galley kitchen. You would never notice - it's as delicious as if it were served in a five-star restaurant, complete with white linens fine china and fresh-cut flowers. I can hardly wait for the three course lunch of Prime Alberta Beef or fresh Black Tiger Prawns along with local BC wines, garnering a lot of attention in recent years.
Relaxing in our seats and enjoying the panoramic views, we are struck by the change of scenery hour by hour; from lush farmland and coastal rainforest to dry, desert-like conditions in the BC interior. After a refreshing overnight stay in Kamloops, the anticipation is palpable as we travel through various mountain ranges and start climbing into the Rockies. Each hour the mountains grow taller and more dramatic, each corner lends itself to another towering rock wall. The water changes to a beautiful turquoise hue caused from glacial run off as it swirls and crashes through the plunging gorges. Fellow passengers keep a keen eye out for soaring eagles, spawning salmon, grizzly bear or moose.
As we pull into the picturesque mountain town of Banff, Alberta we are excited for the next chapter of our adventure in the Rocky Mountains. Glacier Helicopter tours and Columbia Icefields adventures await and there is no limit to the amazing scenery and wildlife we will encounter along the way.
