ach boast a rather impressive buffet restaurant, they share the remaining six restaurants. These include Bali-Hai for Asian food, Mare Nostrum for seafood, Capri for Italian and the steak house Santa Fe. Two beach restaurants provide snacks. Drinks are provided by all of the restaurants, as well as in several bars dotting the grounds.

Recreational options here are plentiful. The three tennis courts are lighted, and the 18-hole miniature golf is nestled under the trees. A four-hole pitch-and-putt and a basketball and multisport court are on-site. A nine-hole golf course is a mile away. The two pools are massive. One has a roped-off children's area, and the other is reserved for activities. Both have whirlpools alongside. Nonmotorized watersports are included, and one diving lesson in the pool is free. Sailing and windsurfing lessons are offered. Live nightly shows are staged in the Kukulcan Theater, which seats 1,200. The disco has no admission charge and serves complimentary drinks. Children enjoy their own free club. There is also an animation center offering nonstop programs for both children and adults.

Rounding out the activities roster is a full-service spa with saunas, steam baths, whirlpools, a beauty shop and a well-equipped gym. This is a popular location for incentive groups, with meeting facilities at the ready for up to 500. Meeting services are supported by a small business center and a small library. Valet parking is free.

The guest rooms throughout are almost identical, with light-wood and rattan furniture and patterned soft goods showing modest regional flair. The uninspired standard rooms, which feature either one king or two double beds are trumped by the spacious, noticeably superior junior suites (studios). All rooms come with TVs, a minibar stocked daily, a coffeemaker and robes. Intenet access is available only in the lobby. Each has a balcony or terrace with a hammock or patio set.

Room service carries an extra charge. Elevators and specially equipped rooms serve guests in wheelchairs. Pets are not permitted.

Guests enamored with large-scale destination resorts will find this to one of the best on the Mayan Riviera. However, its isolation is a source of contention for some. Renting a car is the only means by which an individual can unstick themselves from Barcelo's sun-streaked web. For a plop vacation in an upscale tropical hotel, families and couples will find this to be an excellent pick. The Iberstar Resort sits in this hotel's shadow.
