Day 1: Rome

Arrive in Rome at your leisure. This evening meet your Back-Roads tour leader and fellow travellers for a pre-tour briefing followed by a welcome dinner. (D)

Day 2: Rome

This morning we explore Rome’s classical streets and visit the Colosseum, the Forum and the Gladiator School to discover the secrets of Imperial Rome's Gladiator Games. The rest of the day is yours to spend at your leisure. (B)

Day 3: Rome - Assisi - Perugia

Today we visit the picturesque town of Assisi, the birthplace of Saint Francis. Tonight we spend the night in Perugia, a lively medieval walled town. (B)

Day 4: Perugia - Siena - Chianti

After a guided tour of Siena we travel through a landscape of rolling green hills, vineyards and age-old olive groves to our idyllic rural villa in the Chianti region, our base for the next two nights. (B, D)

Day 5: Chianti

This morning learn the art of traditional Italian cooking and try your hand at pasta and bread making. We then sit down to enjoy the dishes that we have prepared. This afternoon enjoy Chianti wine tasting in our Tuscan villa. (B, L, D)

Day 6: Chianti - Florence - Lucca

Most of today will be spent in Florence. After visiting the Galleria dell'Accademia, home to Michelangelo's David, we enjoy a walking tour of the city. Late this afternoon we continue our journey to Lucca, probably the most spectacular walled town in Italy. (B)

Day 7: Lucca - Pisa - Lucca

Journey to ancient Pisa, with its famous Leaning Tower that has withstood the onslaught of gravity for almost 600 years. Inside the Baptistery of St. John we discover the building’s remarkable acoustics. This afternoon we return to Lucca, where you have time to explore this almost perfectly preserved jewel of medieval architecture at your own pace. (B)

Day 8: Lucca - Cinque Terre - Soragna

Travel to the Italian Riviera and explore its rugged coastline, which includes the five captivating villages that make up the Cinque Terre. We explore three of these wonderful villages to discover the secrets of this stunning UNESCO World Heritage Site. We then continue to our overnight accommodation in Soragna, a town in a region known as Italy’s “Food Valley”. (B, D)

Day 9: Soragna - Ravenna

We begin our exploration of the food valley with a visit and tasting at a local producer of Felino Salame, Culatello and Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese. After traditional balsamic vinegar tasting in Modena, we travel to Ravenna for an evening at leisure. (B)

Day 10: Ravenna - Venice

This morning we explore Ravenna, the best place in Italy to see early Christian and Byzantine Mosaics. When we reach Venice we take a water taxi to our hotel, located on Venice Island itself. (B)

Day 11: Venice

Enjoy a guided walking tour of this fascinating city. Watch daily Venetian life pass by in bustling St Mark’s Square and see local landmarks including St Mark’s Basilica, Doge’s Palace and Rialto Bridge. This afternoon is free for you to continue your independent exploration of the city. (B)

Day 12: Venice - Verona - Lake Maggiore

We head to romantic Verona and explore the city, seeing its colossal Roman Amphitheatre and Juliet’s Balcony. This afternoon we travel to the serene Lakes region of northern Italy for an evening at leisure. (B)

Day 13: Lake Maggiore

We spend most of today exploring the Borromean islands on Lake Maggiore visiting Isola Bella with its magnificent Baroque Garden, Isola dei Pescatori with its pretty harbour and Isola Madre with its wonderful Renaissance Villa. The rest of the day is free for you to relax on the shores of Lake Maggiore. (B)

Day 14: Lake Maggiore - Milan

This morning we visit Lake Orta, the enchanting lake that the Milanese try to keep to themselves. After some time exploring the lake we enjoy a farewell lunch together. Leaving the serenity of the Lakes behind we head to Milan, Italy’s famous fashion capital, where the tour ends. (B, L)

The tour commences from Hotel Domus Australia, Via Cernaia, 14/b, 00185 Rome, Italy at 6:00pm. Please ensure you are at the meeting point at least 15 minutes prior to departure.


Drop-off 4:00pm at Hotel Genius Downtown, Via Porlezza, 4, 20123 Milan, Italy. Please bear in mind that drop-off time is an estimate only – traffic can be unpredictable!
