Itinerary

Day 1: Marrakech

Welcome to Morocco! Be sure to arrive in time for your pre-departure meeting at 6pm, an arrival transfer from Marrakech airport is included. Your first night will be spent at our pre-expedition hotel. Tonight we enjoy a traditional dinner in Marrakech.

Day 2: Rabat

En-route this morning we travel up to Casablanca, made famous by Humphrey Bogart in the film ‘Casablanca’. We will visit the stunning Hassan 2 Mosque, which has the tallest minaret and the third largest mosque in the world - it can hold 25,000 worshippers at any one time. We will spend the afternoon and evening in Morocco’s capital city Rabat to visit some of the highlights of Rabat, including the Chellah.

Day 3 & 4: Fes

Travelling towards the imperial city of Fes, we make a stop in Meknes, also known as the Versailles of Morocco. Surrounded by fertile ground, coupled with its impressive buildings and history, we can see why Meknes is one of the four Imperial Cities of Morocco. We’ll then move on to bustling Fes this afternoon stopping on route in Volubilis for a guided tour. Fes is the oldest and largest medieval city in the world. Its medina is a heady mix of aromas, sounds and sights. To navigate, follow one of the five themed tourist circuits. There are plenty of mosques and palaces to visit, but be aware that only Muslims can enter Mosques in Morocco. After exploring dye-pits, tanneries and restaurants, we return to our hotel to prepare for an optional night of Moroccan entertainment and food at a restaurant in town.

Day 5: Midelt

This morning we journey over the Moyen Atlas to stop at Midelt, which is a beautiful alpine area. Surrounded by huge pine trees, this tranquil mountain setting is a great spot to cool down and relax after the hustle and bustle of Fes. We will enjoy a small hike in the afternoon, before spending the night in this mountain location.

Day 6: Sahara Desert

Today we enjoy a stunning drive and are rewarded by a fantastic Moroccan lunch and an afternoon relaxing and swimming. It is then time to head towards the great desert and Merzouga, where we transfer to camels for a trek into the Sahara Desert for a night at our Berber Camp. We enjoy local food, music and an amazing night out under the Saharan stars.

Day 7: Gorges du Dades

Leaving the desert, we move on to Todra Gorge. This 1000ft gorge is hemmed in on all sides by vertical limestone cliffs and is called Morocco’s Grand Canyon. There’s time to explore the gorge today, from its plunging depths to dizzying heights. The charm of Todra lies in its changing colours as the sun slowly moves from east to west. We move onto the stunning Gorge du Dades for the night. (B,D)

Day 8: Marrakech

We stop off at Ait Benhaddou, the UNESCO listed fortified settlement, on our journey back to Marrakech. Taking the new highway back, we’ll arrival at the final one of Morocco’s four Imperial cities we visit on this tour. Set against the snow-capped Atlas Mountains, Marrakech’s great pride and landmark is the Koutoubia Tower, sister to the Tower of Hassan in Rabat and the Giralda Tower in Seville. It is said that after the third of these was completed, the sultan had the eyes of his architect put out, lest he should build another more beautiful tower elsewhere.

Day 9: Marrakech

Enjoy a guided city tour of Marrakech today, taking you through the winding streets, bustling souks, and the focal point of the city - the great Djemâa-el-Fna. No visit to the city is complete without a visit to the city’s UNESCO-listed medina and Djemâael-Fna, an extraordinary gathering and market place. Explore this mystical city at your leisure, and relax with our optional activity – a visit to a traditional hamman. Enjoy a steam bath followed by an exfoliating massage - the ideal end to the day.
