Natural wonders, cosmopolitan city appeal, Timbits*. There are many reasons why Canada is number one on the New York Times’ list of 52 places to travel in 2017. Our favourite Flightie, Allison Wallace, sat down with Mi-Jung Lee at CTV’s News at Noon in Vancouver to chat about this earnest triumph and why Canada should be on your list of places to see this year, plus more options for outdoor lovers, hidden gem hunters, and food and wine enthusiasts.
*although Timbits are not mentioned in the New York Times’ article, it’s safe to assume these are part of what make the collective whole of our nation great
Banff, Alberta
In honour of Canada’s 150th birthday, Parks Canada is giving away free passes for Canadians to explore our very own parks, historic sites and marine conservation areas from coast to coast. What better time than 2017 to discover our own beautiful backyard.
Why not start in Banff? Known for its rugged wilderness and placid charm, Banff’s Rocky Mountain-scapes are easy on the eyes and a natural playground for outdoors enthusiasts. Whether you want to ski or snowboard in the winter or camp, hike and kayak in the summer, Banff is a year-round all-Canadian destination you need on your list.
Park City, Utah
As our top destination in the Land of the Free, Utah is an outdoor lover’s dream. When Utah hosted the Winter Olympics in 2002, the city invested in some of the world’s best outdoor facilities providing world-class hiking, biking and skiing.
Park City also hosts the annual Sundance Film Festival, which jolts this sleepy little town awake as it buzzes with Hollywood celebrities and movie royalty. Enjoy the burgeoning restaurant scene, exceptional shopping and people watching in between and during festival season.
Warsaw, Poland
Poland makes it on our list as an emerging, up-and-coming destination. While it garners comparisons to Prague, we’ve also noticed more and more people travel to Poland to venture slightly off-the-beaten-path, taking advantage of this incredibly affordable option in Europe.
Warsaw, Poland’s largest city and capital, beams with old world charm and appeal, centuries of fascinating history, beautiful medieval architecture and friendly locals. You’re definitely going to want to add Warsaw to your list before it’s on everyone else’s.
Barcelona, Spain
Spain is one of our all-time favourite destinations. From the Michelin-star restaurants in Basque Country, to the beaches in the south and every poetic line of every structure touched by architect Antoni Gaudi, there is simply not enough time to discover this country in a single trip. Barcelona is an absolute must-see, especially if you like food, wine, and the aforementioned architecture and art.
Solo travellers will especially enjoy travelling Barcelona because of how easy it is to navigate, how safe it is, and how much there is to see for free. This city is an outdoor museum of traditional and modern architecture, after all.
