On a recent trip to the United Arab Emirates, I jumped at the chance to tag along on an expat’s road trip through beautiful Oman. This neighbour to the south boasts incredible views, happening cities, interesting shopping and beautiful coastlines – without the crowds of the UAE. Get there before the rest of the world does, and discover these five can’t-miss experiences.
Drive through the Desert
Shop in Muscat
The Old Muttrah Souk in Muscat is the place to be on a weekend night when it fills with locals looking to take in views of the harbour, dine at the restaurants on the water, or shop for goods like dates, spices, jewelry and clothing. As a tourist, be sure to haggle – and always be ready to walk away if you want to get the best price.
This historic town is 2 hours from Muscat. It’s a great stop for some history, with ancient stone buildings and beautiful markets (including a great date market,) surrounded by a thick palm oasis and Oman’s tallest mountains.
Snorkel crystal waters
Oman has unspoilt coastlines, and it’s easy and affordable to charter a boat for the day and explore the tranquil blues of the coast.
Visit the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque
This Muscat Mosque is a vision in white, a beautiful example of architecture and an important place of worship.
