Air Canada to Make Changes to Carry-On Policy

Starting on May 25, 2015, Air Canada will be making some changes to its carry-on baggage policy.

The changes will take place first at the Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ), and will expand to other airports throughout the month of June. Expect to see agents at check-in with new luggage tags that indicate your carry-on has met the necessary measurement requirements. You’ll also meet Air Canada staff at security checkpoints, ready and waiting to give you the go-ahead on your luggage.

If your Air Canada carry-on exceeds the measurements required to bring it on board with you, you’ll be given a card that will allow you to quickly return to a check-in agent who will assist you with checking your luggage before you continue on to your gate. The move is intended to increase efficiency, as many delays are caused by passengers over-stuffing their carry-on luggage in an attempt to avoid checked bag fees.

What do you think about these changes? Do you expect to see a speedier check-in process as a result? Let us know in the comments below!

I agree with this policy. Having returned from a recent trip, I could not believe the size and amount of carry-on people were allowed to bring on board.

  2. AJ says:

While I agree that many passengers are stuffing the overhead compartments with oversized carry on luggage that should have been checked in. However I expect this will only get worst with airlines charging for the first piece of luggage because passengers are trying whatever means they can to save money. I expect airlines will soon be charging a toll to use the washroom on board the aircraft.
Make no mistake this is all about money and the bottom line for airlines. Airline travel has become a luxury than many Canadians can no longer afford!

About time, should have a stainless steel box with a micro switch on it,if your bag fits in the box and you can close the lid you can carry it on board.

    It is about time.

I totally agree that some carry-on are too big. I don’t always bring a carry-on other than my purse. The
last time I had a carry-on they announceed that anyone who could check it in because the flight was full I was the first one to do so followed by about 5 others. Within 12 months I will fly with Air Canada 5 times.
On another note, we flew back from Frankferd, Germany on April 6 to Toronto and then Halifax, on the flight from Frankferd I was on the isle side of the left.In the middle row there were 3 seats, 1 was empty so a man and a woman sat and the man took off his sneakers and laid right across the seats with his feet sticking out so I had a very unpleasant smell all the way I just thought to let you know I don’t think anyone should lay down in a plane. Thank you

Terrific idea. I am sick and tired of people with more carryon bags than is allowed taking up all the space in the storage bins. It would be nice if someone could enforce the 1 carryon in the overhead and 1 personal under the seat in front of you. That way there would be space enough for everyone.

It’s about time…. I carry a purse only… Most folks can hardly get their bags through the aisle let alone lift to the overhead compartment. Way to go

  8. william service says:

There starting to get it right !

  9. Allan says:

Great !,,,, the charge should be less but air canada has to ensure
That they enforce the rules for all…no baby strollers or hockey bags and a 10.00 dollar fee is better if the bag is only slightly over the new guidelines…

  10. Vagn says:

Maybe now I can find enough space for my small carry on , smart move thank you
