Antigua’s diminutive size makes it a perfect island for casual road trippers. No matter where the roads take you, you can be relaxing in your resort by dinner time. Plus, every single one of the island’s 365 beautiful beaches (or 366, depending on who you ask) is available for the public to enjoy. So when the waves inevitably beckon, feel free to pull over and dive right in.
Top 9 Destinations to Drive to in Antigua
1. Hike Through Antigua’s Rainforest
While not technically a rainforest if you ask any ecologist, Antigua’s collection of densely vegetated mountains certainly looks like one. During the summer, the trees burst with tropical fruit, which many people pick and enjoy on the spot. Ziplining, kayaking, and guided hikes are all fantastic ways to experience Antigua’s “fluscious” rainforest (If you’re staying at The Royalton, Sugar Ridge, or Verandah Resort & Spa you can enjoy special hiking excursions).
2. Turn Up at Turners Beach
Turners Beach has one of the best atmospheres in Antigua. Stop by Rumbus Beach for a lively crowd and casual eats or enjoy the great company and excellent food at Jacqui O’s rustic fine dining spot. The kids will fall in love with Swash Water Park nearby.
3. Explore St. John’s
Both Antigua’s rural and city roads offer great views. In St. John’s, you’ll pass by rainbow-coloured neighbourhoods that are a sight for sore eyes (but a familiar view for many Maritime Canadians!) While in town, stop at the farmer’s market, local boutiques, museums, galleries, and snack shops. Plus, see if you can spot the VC Bird monument, in honour of Antigua’s first prime minister.
4. Watch a Cricket Match at Sir Vivian Richards Stadium
Antigua’s cricket obsession is far from unusual as a former British colony. Their state of the art stadium has hosted many nail-biting international cricket matches! If your island getaway lines up with cricket season, heading to Vivian Richards is a must.
5. Visit Devil’s Bridge National Park
Devil’s Bridge National Park is a worthwhile drive from anywhere on the island, but if you’re staying at Verandah Resort & Spa or Pineapple Beach Club, Devil’s Bridge is within hiking distance. Even better, Devil’s Bridge is just steps away for guests of Hammock Cove! Keep an eye out for wild donkeys and pack your good hiking shoes.
6. Gawk at Willoughby Bay
It’s almost impossible to choose which coastline offers the best views, but Willoughby Bay is definitely in the running for first place. Can you spot the pink buildings? They’re a rehabilitation establishment sponsored by Eric Clapton (and- rumour has it – visited by Whitney Houston who also owned property in Antigua).
7. Lunch at Outhouse at Pineapple Beach Club
Don’t let the name fool you, Outhouse is a hip BBQ & Bar with gorgeous ocean views. It has a unique, eclectic atmosphere that makes everyone want to stay all day. Have a few beers and some BBQ chicken and leave your name among the thousands of guests who have come before you. If you’re staying at any of the Elite Island Resorts, ask your Expert Traveller to arrange a visit for you.
8. Visit Antigua’s Donkey Sanctuary
You’re likely to see both domesticated and wild donkeys throughout your road trip, but at Antigua’s donkey sanctuary, you’ll have the chance to safely interact with these rescued cuties. Just try to remember you can’t bring them back on the plane with you.
9. Catch a Festival
Depending on when you visit Antigua, you may be able to catch Antigua Restaurant Week, Surfing Week, Seafood Festival, or the biggest festival of all, Antigua Carnival! Enjoy the local vendors (natural soap-making is a crowd favourite along with local artists) and of course, food stalls.
