Travelling to or through London? Our flightie, Wes Farrar, fills us in on a great way to see the city in a short amount of time, while saving money doing it! He shares with us his experience on the 5 day, 4 night Contiki London Explorer tour:
If you’re thinking about heading over to Europe or the United Kingdom and will be stopping off in London at some point, then this tour is for you!
Anyone taking part in an organized vacation in Europe or the UK usually will begin or end their trip in London. It’s one of the top transit cities in the world and a history buffs dream. Mix in the endless shows you can take in and the countless museums, London has something for everyone and anyone.
Before going I had been told that London is one of the worlds most expensive cities. (Well, it’s not cheap I can tell you that). However there are some great ways to stretch your dollar further. I decided on seeing London with the 5 Day 4 Night package ‘London Explorer’ that Contiki Holidays offers. This is perfect for people stopping over in London for a few days, someone who is either at the beginning or end of a tour, or someone looking to get away for a while. There are a number of inclusions that makes the package a great buy:
First off, included in your package are Heathrow tube transfers. It by no means gets you to the front door of your hotel, but is a great cost saver from taking a taxi or shuttle. With the seemingly endless routes offered by the London Underground, you can literally get to where ever your hotel is. Upon arrival I recommend heading over to the Royal National to the Contiki office to pick up your package and sign up for your excursions. Here’s a run down of what’s included and that makes this a great value:
-Return Heathrow Airport Tube transfers
-Your 4 nights accommodation
-A day excursion to Stonehenge and Bath (Bath was such a beautiful city. The ancient Roman Baths are a sight to see!)
-A 24hr Hop On Hop Off pass on the “Original” open top London sightseeing bus tour. (This is a 25 pound value in London. I recommend the Yellow route as it provides live commentary as you are touring around the city.)
-A 3 Day London Underground Pass for zones 1 & 2. (Pretty much all you need to see are within those zones.)
-Tickets to a show of your choice. (Now you are limited to the shows you can see but the list is rather extensive. We had the chance to see Phantom of the Opera, my first time seeing it. What an experience!!)
With all of the inclusions in this package, it made London a lot more affordable. Easily the best way to enjoy London is on the only free mode of transportation available… your feet! Walking the streets of London is the cheapest and most interesting way to see the city. Take in the sights around Big Ben, Westminster Abby, and the Thames River area. Stroll up to Hyde Park and Marble Arch. Sit and enjoy the crazy scene by Picadilly Circus, Leicester Square, and Covent Gardens. And for anyone who is a shopping fanatic, don’t forget about Oxford and Regent Street. A few other great attractions in London are the Natural History Museum and The British Museum. Both are no cost to enter and I could have easily spent the whole day in either of them.
It was my first time experiencing London and I will definitely return. The Contiki London Explorer Package was a great value and great way to see the city. Anyone heading over to the UK or starting in London to see Europe should consider this tour.
With so much to see in London, trust me… you will miss something and have to return!
