Hawaii: More Than Just Beaches

Hawaii: More Than Just Beaches

An adventure traveller may not think there would be much for them to do in beautiful Hawaii, but our Flightie Jessica Huber discovered that Hawaii is so much more than just a beautiful beach! She shares the vast amount of adventures she had in Hawaii, and the opportunities she plans to go back for.

Hawaii was never a place on the top of my list of places to go. I had heard nothing but great things about it, but I had always thought of it as just really beautiful beaches. As an adventure traveller, I wanted to go somewhere that I could find adventure and Hawaii did not seem like one of those places. I wanted to go somewhere that had more to it than lying on the beach. I was very lucky to experience that Hawaii really does have something for everyone.

Honolulu is where I discovered my first opportunity for adventure in Hawaii. Everywhere I went I was taking pictures. There were lots of beautiful trees and endless panoramic views of beaches and sunsets. My favourite pictures were those with Diamond Head in the background. When I asked about Diamond Head it was suggested to me that I go climb it and discover it for myself. It had never occurred to me that I would get to go hiking in Hawaii.

Hawaii

The hike was moderate which meant that amateur and professional hikers alike could both experience this beautiful adventure. We started before the sun came up, which I would recommend to anyone doing the hike as it makes it all the more magical. It felt very peaceful to get away from the hustle and bustle of Honolulu. The views as we climbed were spectacular but, nothing compared to the view at the top. It was breath taking to see the sun coming up over the clear blue water. It was a view of Honolulu that I think everyone should experience. This was the only hike I was able to do while in Hawaii but as the trip continued I learned about many more places in Hawaii that you can hike; one of the many reasons that I want to come back to Hawaii.

HawaiiOnce in Maui I discovered more things an adventure traveller would want to experience; snorkelling and diving. Unfortunately, I did not get the chance to go diving but I did get to snorkel. We headed out on what became a dolphin and whale watching paradise. Being the start of whale season, we were very lucky to see as many whales as we did. I have also never seen so many dolphins all at once. The excitement of watching whales and dolphins almost made me forget how excited I was to snorkel. The snorkelling was everything I had hoped it would be. I have been snorkelling all over the world and would recommend Hawaii as a great place to go. We saw tons of beautiful fish and coral and it made me wish I was diving. I could only imagine how much more there was to see.

There was so much more I wish I could have experienced while I was in Hawaii.  I now have a list of things I want to do when I go back. To name a few:  hiking Haleakala volcano, ziplining , sky diving, learning to surf and golf.

Who knew there would be so many things in Hawaii I would want to do?! Not to mention I have only been to two of the many islands.  For all those people out there that were just like me and did not have Hawaii on the top of their travel list, I hope they give Hawaii a chance. It is so much more than a beautiful beach and I cannot wait to go again.
