Insider Tips from a London Local

Insider Tips from a London Local

Planning a trip to the UK? We asked London local Jayne to give us the goods on the best things to do in royal city. She shares her top 5 must-do’s and why they are worth adding to your itinerary.

1. Have a Curry on Brick Lane

Almost festival atmosphere on weekends – they’ve got live music, vintage markets, stalls selling beer, asian food and the whole street is lined with amazing curry houses.  Brick Lane is a must visit! Insider Tip– make sure you barter with the vendors outside the restaurants – for big groups they often give away free bottles of wine to have you sit inside and make their place look busy.

2. Portobello Road Market

For all sorts of bric and brac and vintage clothing this market is A MUST. You must try the amazing cupcakes at the Hummingbird Bakery. Trust me.

3. Buckingham Palace

changing of the guard

You have to do some traditional sights, and this is one of the most iconic.  Look out for times of the changing of the guard to see the soldiers in full regalia. Nearby you can have afternoon tea at the gorgeous Goring Hotel – the same hotel Kate Middleton spent her last night before becoming royalty!

4. Design Museum

Although the Tate Modern is the popular choice, try something a little different! The Design Museum offers fantastic views of Tower Bridge and Canary Wharf from its riverside location. If you’re a Fashionista – keep an eye out for exhibitions at Somerset House – also a venue for outdoor cinema screenings in the summer – they play films like Woody Allen classics (loves!)

5. American Bar at recently renovated Savoy.

Old school glamour gets a fresh look. A gentleman plays piano in the middle of the room and staff wear white coats & tails.  The corridor is lined with pictures of their many famous guests. Oh and did I mention they have their own chocolatier in the hotel? Check it out while you wait for your table. It’s also close to the theatre district, so why not head here for a pre-theatre drink?
