As Intrepid Travel starts planning their return to running trips, the safety and wellbeing of their travellers, leaders, crew, staff and suppliers will remain their priority, and their return to operations will be done in a careful and responsible way.

Intrepid has reviewed all their health and safety policies and is implementing new minimum standards that emphasize increased hygiene and sanitation. These are in line with recommendations from the World Health Organization and following the World Travel & Tourism Council’s (WTTC) Safe Travel protocols for tour operators. Before Intrepid resumes trips in any destination, their itineraries will undergo a comprehensive risk assessment and audit, while leaders and suppliers will complete COVID-19 health and safety training.

How will Intrepid Travel decide when it is safe enough to resume travelling to a country?

As operations resume, Intrepid will continue to be guided by foreign travel and health advice from government authorities, such as the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and other reputable authorities, like the World Health Organization. It is likely that countries or regions will open gradually and, in many cases, only to nationals from certain countries.

As responsible travellers, anyone who chooses to travel with Intrepid has a duty of care to themselves and the people around them. Intrepid asks that all travellers comply with local regulations and laws, as well as their own health and safety guidelines, to ensure that everyone can enjoy their adventure while remaining well.

What is Intrepid Travel doing to increase the hygiene and safety of their trips?

Intrepid is reviewing all health and safety policies and implementing new minimum standards that emphasize increased hygiene and sanitation. These are in line with recommendations from the World Health Organization and following the World Travel & Tourism Council’s (WTTC) Safe Travel protocols for tour operators. All their trips will undergo a comprehensive risk assessment and audit before they reopen in the destination and all leaders and suppliers will be required to complete COVID-19 health and safety training. Intrepid is also putting additional measures in place, in line with government health advice and with global health authorities, to ensure that they maintain the highest standards of cleanliness and hygiene.

  • On-trip physical distancing
  • Pre-trip and on-trip health screenings and monitoring

Will I be required screening or COVID-19 testing before travel?

At the group meeting, you will be asked to complete a self-screening health form and report any COVID-19 symptoms as well as any close contact with someone who has suspected or confirmed COVID-19. If you are displaying any symptoms or have any health concerns at this time, Intrepid’s team will assist you to seek medical advice and you will not be permitted to join the trip. Intrepid Travel asks all travellers to continue to monitor their health throughout their travels and report any relevant symptoms.

Can I get a refund if I am unwell before my trip and unable to travel?

If you are unwell prior to travelling, please stay at home and contact your Travel Expert to make alternative arrangements. Please refer to Intrepid Travel’s Booking Conditions for more details on their refund policy.

Will insurance cover me if I get COVID-19 when travelling?

What if there is a suspected or confirmed case of COVID-19 on my trip?

If you or someone else on your trip has symptoms of COVID-19 while travelling with Intrepid, they will assist you to get medical care. Intrepid Travel will follow the advice of local health authorities on whether a COVID-19 test is required, whether there is a need to self-isolate or quarantine or whether there is a risk to other travellers in the group. Should COVID-19 be confirmed, full health and safety protocols will be enacted, including informing local health authorities, informing the group of the potential exposure, and sanitation protocols such as deep cleaning and disinfecting accommodation and transport. Please note that while Intrepid will assist to ensure that you get all the help and support you require, all expenses for testing, treatment or self-isolation will need to be covered by you.

If I get COVID-19 on my trip will I get my money back?

If you are unable to continue travelling with us due to a suspected or confirmed case of COVID-19 Intrepid Travel can offer you a credit for the unused days of your trip.

Will I have to wear a mask when travelling? Will Intrepid provide masks?

Globally, Intrepid continues to follow the advice of the World Health Organization regarding wearing masks. The current advice is that if you are healthy, you only need to wear a mask if you are taking care of a person with COVID-19 or in a destination with widespread community transmission when physical distancing is difficult.

However, in some destinations, it may be compulsory to wear a mask in public or in certain places such as on some airlines. In these cases, Intrepid will follow the requirements of local health authorities. Check the airline and foreign travel advice for your destination on whether wearing a mask is required, as you will need to source your own from home if it is a requirement. Familiarize yourself with how to safely wear, handle and dispose of masks if wearing them when travelling. While Intrepid’s leaders carry masks as part of their first aid kits, they are unable to provide masks for daily use for travellers.

Do I need to bring my own hand sanitizer?

Intrepid is working with their local partners to provide hand sanitizer at accommodation, on transport and at restaurants. They recommend also bringing your own personal supply for times when it is not available, such as when exploring a destination independently.

I am a solo traveller. Will I have to share a room with a stranger?

Intrepid Travel’s trips are based on twin share accommodation. Most of their trips have Single Supplements available for solo travellers who do not wish to share a room. They are working with their accommodation providers to ensure that more rooms are available for those travellers who wish to room alone.

Will you put limits on the number of travellers in a vehicle to adhere to social distancing? Are you still using public transport?

In the lead up to international travel resuming Intrepid will be auditing all trips according to their COVID-19 Safe Guidelines. These guidelines incorporate recommendations and best practices from organizations such as the World Health Organization, United Nations World Tourism Organization and World Travel and Tourism Council. In deciding what changes may need to be made to the transport used on their trips to reduce the risk of COVID-19 transmission Intrepid will consider:

  • Local laws or requirements regarding physical distancing on transport
  • Hygiene protocols of the transport provider
  • Length of journey
  • Size of vehicle
  • Group size
  • Level of active community transmission in the destination

Will there be changes made to the itinerary and inclusions of my trip due to COVID-19 related travel restrictions?

Intrepid Travel’s operations teams are keeping up to date with local developments, including any closures or changes to sights and attractions. As the situation evolves and they get closer to being able to operate again, they made need to make some changes to the activities or destinations included on your trip to comply with advice from local authorities or their health and safety protocols. Intrepid will endeavour to keep travellers updated before departure through their Essential Trip Information online. Particularly if you are on one of the first trips once a destination re-opens for foreign travellers, an open mind and sense of flexibility will help you get the most out of your trip.
