Princess Cruises celebrates its 50th birthday next year, and oceans of preparations for this milestone are underway.
The cruise line became a household name in the late 70s, thanks to the popularity of The Love Boat TV series, which “starred” the Pacific Princess luxury liner. Comically depicting the adventures (and misadventures) of life on a cruise ship, featuring main and recurring characters, the show ran from 1977- 1987 and remains a pop culture icon today.
Fittingly, in honour of Princess’ golden anniversary, the Love Boat cast is making waves once again by serving as the cruise line’s global ambassadors. The show, the brainchild of television visionary Aaron Spelling, was instrumental in promoting the idea of cruising, helping not only the success of Princess but other commercial lines, with a powerful ripple effect still felt today.
The six original Love Boat cast members, Gavin MacLeod (Captain Stubing), Jill Whelan (Vicki, the captain’s daughter), Bernie Kopell (the ship’s doctor), Fred Grandy (Gopher), Ted Lange (Isaac, the bartender) and Lauren Tewes (Julie, the cruise director) will reunite on November 5, as godparents of Princess Cruises’ latest ship, the Regal Princess.
The longstanding tradition of “christening” a ship normally selects a female as its godmother. Most recently, the former Kate Middleton, now Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, christened the Royal Princess, the sister ship of the Regal Princess.
In the case of this co-ed christening crew, an exception was made. As Princess president Jan Swartz pointed out, the Love boat cast members are the most suitable godparents as they “put Princess Cruises on the map.”
The majestic Regal Princess had her inaugural sail in the spring and makes her maiden Caribbean voyage this fall, sailing from Fort Lauderdale, where the christening ceremony will take place. The deluxe ocean liner can accommodate 3,560 guests, who will be lucky enough to experience many exciting features unique to Princess. These include the SeaWalk, a glass-bottomed walkway that extends 9 metres beyond the ship for exhilarating ocean views, the world’s biggest pastry shop at sea, plus the superb activities, amenities and dining for which Princess is known.
