Theme Cruises All the Rage in 2017

theme cruises

There’s a reason that ComiCon events have been some of the best attended gatherings on the planet lately – people are die-hard fans of nostalgia, and hey, it’s fun to dress up! Cruise lines have caught on to the phenomenon and brought the action to the high seas. By now, you may have heard about Disney’s upcoming Marvel Day at Sea, and if you haven’t, comics must not be your thing.

Disney Magic’s upcoming ComiCon at sea however isn’t the only theme cruise on the market – it’s just one of many, and the list keeps growing every year. The following special sailings are what you can expect in 2017 and beyond. Anchors aweigh!

Families with younger children will love Carnival Cruise Line’s Seuss at Sea. Though not technically a theme cruise (as it’s available on all Carnival ships and on all sailings) the program facilitates fun family, dining and entertainment experiences based on the beloved Dr. Seuss books. The Seuss-a-palooza Parade and Story Time and The Green Eggs and Ham Breakfast with The Cat in the Hat and Friends are top attractions, as are other various character interactions and the many Dr. Seuss toys and games onboard. Carnival’s newest ships, the Freedom and Vista, even feature Dr. Seuss Bookville, the ultimate family reading room.

Live Music Theme Cruises

Cruise and music lovers should keep an eye out for a company called Sixthman, pioneers in the themed charter cruise market, especially when it comes to organizing sailings featuring world-class musical acts. In their 15-year history, big names such as John Mayer, Kid Rock, KISS, Barenaked Ladies, Lyle Lovett, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Florida Georgia Line, Pitbull and more have all been featured on sailings and new acts come onboard every year. But it doesn’t stop at music with Sixthman.

Sci-Fi Theme Cruises

The Walking Dead series is one of TV’s hottest and while the idea of a boatful of zombies chasing guests around is off-putting to many, hardcore fans of the show are dying (ahem) to find an empty cabin. Joining the thousands of fans onboard will be the show’s Norman Reedus, Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Chandler Riggs, among others, and zombie makeovers will be on deck for all guests. The ‘Walker Stalker Cruise’, departing February 3, 2017 on Norwegian Cruise Line’s Norwegian Pearl, is without a doubt, one of this year’s hottest theme cruise.

In keeping with the Sci-Fi theme, Star Trek cruises remain some of the most sought-after charter sailings, and Star Trek: Cruise II, slated for January 5-11, 2018, is no exception. If you’ve missed the first, you need to book this now.

Back for another sinfully delicious year are Princess Cruises’ decadent Chocolate Voyages. This year, guests can expect the ‘Premium Chocolate Experience’, complete with chocolate cooking demonstrations, premium chocolate and wine tasting experiences, a chocolate drink menu (Chocolate Bacon Bourbon Bliss or bust!) and even chocolate spa treatments! Yes, there’s a gym and jogging track onboard.

Calling All Budding Photographers

UnCruise Adventures is gearing up for Photographic Perks aboard their explorer ship, Safari Endeavour. During ‘Exploring Muir’s Wilderness’ sailings to Alaska, interested guests can mingle with pro photographers Stephen Matera and Peter West Carey for insights on how to hone their craft. The trip will offer expert lectures, tips and suggested techniques with ample time to get out there and shoot. If Alaska isn’t your thing, the cruise line offers similar photography-based adventures in Mexico’s Sea of Cortez and in and around Costa Rica and Panama.

Jewish Heritage Theme Cruise

Offered on all departures of Uniworld’s 10-day ‘Rhine-Main Discovery & Munich’ itinerary, ’Jewish Heritage’ focuses on historic towns and cities renowned for their storied Jewish legacy, like Dachau, Nuremberg and Wertheim. Travelling from Munich to Cologne, guests can immerse themselves in Jewish-themed shore excursions in just about every port of call. River cruising has never been hotter and Uniworld’s Boutique River Cruise Collection is leading the charge of tailor-made experiences.
