A very cool advertisement for Holland is fast approaching one million YouTube hits since its posting just over a week ago.
Holland’s latest tourism campaign, entitled “The Original Cool” promotes Holland by playing upon its stereotypes of tulips, cheese, Flemish paintings, canals, windmills and wooden shoes. Each one is highlighted then juxtaposed with a “cool” connection that’s exclusively Dutch.
For example, a windmill image is accompanied by the narrator saying, “You call it ‘green energy.’ We call it tradition.”
The video’s successful execution lies in its tongue-in cheek approach and humour as sharp as Dutch cheese—without it being cheesy. The clever campaign also highlights Holland’s welcoming culture and how Dutch speak English well, which are key elements for tourism.
