Frequently Asked Questions
What is an eSIM?
An eSIM is essentially a digital version of the tiny physical chip or SIM card used in mobile devices to connect to carrier networks. The ‘e’ stands for ‘embedded’, meaning your eSIM can be activated online. Once sorted, you can access multiple data networks across the globe without having to sign a new contract or physically change your existing SIM will you travel.
How do eSIMs work?
eSIMs work by tapping into the mobile networks in range of your device. So, rather than relying on the roaming partnerships of your home provider, you have the freedom to switch between carriers without physically changing your SIM card.
What will my phone number be?
Our Travel eSIM offers data only, meaning you’ll keep your normal number for any phone calls or texts. With this in mind, we recommend using data-based apps like WhatsApp, FaceTime, WeChat and iMessage to stay in contact and avoid any roaming charges.
Will my eSIM work in my handset or tablet?
eSIMs are enabled on most devices made from 2018 onwards. Double check our compatibility list to confirm whether your device will support an eSIM before purchasing.
Can I connect to Wi-Fi hotspots?
Of course! Just like a regular SIM card, you are still able to connect to Wi-Fi hotspots. The benefit of an eSIM is that you won’t have to rely on dodgy free Wi-Fi networks or hunt down a café with Wi-Fi to stay connected while travelling the world.
What countries can I use my plan in?
Flight Centre’s travel eSIM can be used in more than 215 countries.
Do I need to configure the data settings?
Install instructions will vary between mobile devices, however you can generally choose between using your eSIM or your regular SIM card in your phone settings. Just make sure ‘Data Roaming’ has been turned on for your travel eSIM once you’re ready to use it.
How do I recharge/add credit/top up?
You can easily top up and add more data to you eSIM online or via the app.
Are eSIMS safe?
In general, eSIMs are considered more secure than regular SIM cards as they can’t physically be removed or tampered with. With this in mind, eSIMs carry a similar risk to physical SIM cards in terms of hacking, tracking or phishing attacks. We recommend using common sense, steer clear of dodgy links and avoid sharing sensitive information online.
Who can I talk to for more eSIM information or help?
Our eSIM support team is available to assist online 24/7 from anywhere in the world.
