Wairakei Terraces & Thermal Health Spa

Location: 671 Wairakei Drive, Wairakei (on the outskirts of Taupō in the North Island)

The thermal pools at Wairakei Terraces & Thermal Health Spa are enriched with silica, magnesium, calcium, potassium and other goodies that promote healthy skin, rid the body of toxins and leave you feeling like you’re floating on clouds. When you’re done soaking, there’s a stunning walkway on the premises that will get you up close to some bubbling, steaming geysers.

The Lost Spring

Tekapo Springs

Location: 300 Lakeside Drive, Lake Tekapo (in the Mackenzie Region of the South Island)

No matter when you’re planning on visiting New Zealand, Tekapo Springs should be on your itinerary. In winter, you’ll get to take in snowy mountain vistas — the facility looks out at the iconic Lake Tekapo and Mount Dobson — but summer is best if you’re after a more unique experience. Tekapo Springs hosts a Soak in the Stars Tour that invites you to gaze up at one of the most impressive dark sky reserves in the world while floating in the hot pools.

Copland Track Hot Springs

Location: Just off State Highway 6 on the northern side of the Karangarua River bridge (26km south of Fox Glacier)

Surrounded by glaciers, streams, spectacular forests and alpine vistas, the Copland Track Hot Springs (aka Welcome Flat Hot Pools) is a natural hot pool near Fox Glacier that is only reached through an 18km trek. But trust us: the hike is worth it. Soaking in a geothermal wonder in the middle of the wilderness is an exhilarating and rewarding experience.

Tired and worn out? Not to worry! There’s a hut on top of the Copland Valley where you can stay the night, put your bags down and gaze up at the starry night.

Polynesian Spa

Location: 1000 Hinemoa Street, Rotorua (in the Bay of Plenty region of the North Island)

The fact that Rotorua is known as New Zealand’s “Sulphur City” should tell you everything you need to know about the quality of these hot springs. With more than 28 mineral pools (some of which overlook Lake Rotorua), the Polynesia Spa is a picture-perfect spot for pampering and relaxation.

Onsen Hot Pools

Location: 160 Arthurs Point Road, Queenstown (a 10-minute drive from downtown)

After a day of action in Queenstown (whether skiing, hiking, jetboating or bungee jumping), reward yourself at Onsen Hot Pools. Here, you’ll get to take in breathtaking views of the Shotover River and Queenstown Hill from a private tub. For an even more romantic setting, book an evening session, light some candles and get enchanted by the dreamy stars from above.

Hanmer Springs Thermal Pools & Spa

Location: 42 Amuri Avenue, Hanmer Springs (approx. 90 minutes from Christchurch in the South Island)

Rock pools, water slides, jets and bubbles — Hanmer Springs has it all! This is the ultimate all-ages spot that you can enjoy during a family vacation, girls’ trip or couples’ getaway. With over seven types of pools, it’s one of the largest thermal water parks in the South Island. Get ready to splash, play and indulge in a little hydrotherapy.

Kerosene Creek

Location: Old Waiotapu Road (just south of Rotorua in the Bay of Plenty region of the North Island)

Situated south of Rotorua, Kerosene Creek is a natural gem that has a small cascading waterfall and thermal rock pools. With streams of hot and cold water blending together, you can navigate your way through the river and rocks pools to find the perfect temperature to unwind. To avoid the rush of people and make the most of the tranquil atmosphere, we recommend getting there early in the morning.

Maruia Hot Springs

Location: 1513 State Highway 7, Lewis Pass (in the Lewis Pass Scenic Reserve area in the South Island)

With a balance of thermal springs, fresh mountain water and a plethora of good minerals, your mind, body and soul will feel refreshed after soaking in these natural hot pools. Bordered by mountains, lush trees and singing birds, Maruia Hot Springs is a great stop on a South Island road trip.

Hot Tubs Omarama

Location: 29 Omarama Avenue, Omarama (in the Waitaki District of the South Island)

If you want to cosy up with your loved one or just soothe your muscles after a day of adventures, head to Hot Tubs Omarama. This is where you can soak in old-style firebox hot tubs and take in the peaceful scenery of the Mackenzie Country. Using fresh mountain water that’s been heated to the perfect temperature, you’ll feel instantly relaxed.
