Are you ready to discover the best restaurants in Vancouver? If you’re driving into Vancouver over the Lion’s Gate Bridge and through Stanley Park, you will arrive on the border of Coal Harbour and the West End. A quick turn right on Denman will take you into the West End and a great variety of delicious food. Tim & Nat of A Cook Not Mad share their new discoveries and a visit to an old favourite.
If La Casita Tacos had been open when we lived in the West End it would definitely have been a regular stop for us. We paid them a visit after a walk in StanleyPark. The decor is typical of a Mexican taco shop and they have plenty of space to sit and enjoy the atmosphere.
Customers place their order at the counter and get their own condiments from a sauce bar. When your order is ready you are either called to the counter or, if someone is free, they will gladly bring it to your table.
We tried the taco al pastor, chicken mole, carnitas and beef lengua, they were all amazing and a great deal at 4 for $10. La Casita is licensed so you can enjoy a beer or margarita with your meal or opt for an alcohol free Mexican soda or Nat’s favourite, horchata, a drink made of rice.
Although the location has been renovated, Seventeen 89 still holds the beauty of its former resident, Delilah’s. We arrived just after 7 pm, missing the cut off for their buck a shuck happy hour but we were able to convince our waiter to extend the deal and guarantee a satisfying first visit. The menu is extensive but not overbearing. We tried the filo baked halibut & dungeness crab and the butternut squash carnaroli risotto, both came piping hot and were quite satisfying.
We indulged in a few of their desserts. They make them small enough that you can try one or a few and not feel stuffed. That’s what I tell myself anyhow.
We weren’t too keen on trying Korean cuisine again. The last time we tried it, at a different restaurant, it was memorable but for all the wrong reasons. Sura has helped us fall in love with Korean food. We enjoyed their bibimbap, sweet potato noodles and their delicious seafood pancake. If you are new to Korean food ask for advice from the wait staff. We like being adventurous but sometimes being too adventurous can ruin a good experience.
Gyoza King is loud but entertaining, the staff is made up of Japanese language students who scream out orders to each other. We’ve spent many a night here and have always been satisfied. They offer a good selection of daily specials on top of their sizeable menu. Some favourites are the tuna tataki (gently seared), beef tataki, agedashi tofu (crispy on the outside and hot as lava on the inside), chicken karaage and all the gyoza. We’ve never had a complaint with Gyoza King other than not being able to get a table right away. Everything is always consistently delicious and an affordable night out.
I feel that the West End may be overlooked for more hip neighbourhoods or that people stick to English Bay and the restaurants nearby. There are so many different cuisines to enjoy in the West End, take the time to explore them on your next trip to Vancouver.
