Fun in the Sun

Rack up those Aeroplan points on your way down south this winter, flying the best option to Mexico and the Caribbean with award-winning airline, Air Canada.

As temperatures across the country begin to hover around the freezing mark, most Canadians start to feel the itch to escape to somewhere warm. Follow the flocks of fleeing geese with Air Canada’s non-stop service to a slew of sunny gems, while building up your status with frequent flyer points on Canada’s flagship carrier.

Here is a quick summary of what’s lining up to be Air Canada’s most popular routes to the sun from across the nation this winter season.

VANCOUVER – CANCUN

  • Air Canada Rouge operates seasonal non-stop flights between Vancouver and Cancun
  • Flights operate twice weekly, on Mondays and Thursdays
  • Flights are operated by Air Canada Rouge’s Boeing 767-300ER aircraft, featuring 24 Premium Rouge and 256 Economy class seats

Note: Non-stop flights are also available on Air Canada Rouge from Toronto and Montreal, and on Air Canada from Calgary, Winnipeg, Ottawa and Halifax.

Cancun

Whether you’re into the glitz of Cancun’s hedonistic hotel zone, its powder-white sand beaches, lavish resorts and world-famous foam parties, the chilled-out islands of Isla Mujeres and Cozumel or the myriad of Mayan ruins of Merida south to Tulum, you’re in the right place.

Mexico’s Mayan Riviera offers visitors a lot of everything, playing perfectly to the see-and-be-seen crowd, history buffs, families, couples and nature lovers alike. The best part is that you don’t have to choose one over another, with extravagant clubs, shopping and dining, flawless beaches and eco-tourist waterparks (Xel-Ha and Xcaret) all a quick taxi ride away.

Accommodations range from a palapa rental on the beach, modest, stylish boutique hotels to some of the most over-the-top resorts fronting the Gulf of Mexico. We dare you to get bored here.

TORONTO – NASSAU

  • Air Canada Rouge operates year-round service between Toronto and Nassau
  • Service increases to daily during the winter months, up from 5 times per week during the remainder of the year
  • Flights are operated by Air Canada Rouge’s Airbus A319 aircraft featuring 12 Premium Rouge and 124 Economy class seats

Note: Non-stop flights are also available on Air Canada Rouge from Montreal.

Atlantis - Nassau - Bahamas

Duty-free shoppers, wandering cruise ship passengers, casino gamblers and bankers all come here regularly but so do ashram yogis, fun-loving families, smitten couples and anyone looking for a quick getaway.

Nassau is as much about conch fritters and straw markets as it is about Sandals resorts and the incredible Atlantis on adjacent Paradise Island. The Bahamas are quick and easy – no language barriers or culture shock. People and yacht watching is a popular pastime here, as are day-passes to Atlantis’ waterslides that spit you out into shark infested aquariums.

There’s a reason cruise ships offer short sailings to the Bahamas from Florida and back – you don’t need much more than Nassau for the perfect week or weekend getaway.

VANCOUVER – PUERTO VALLARTA

  • Air Canada Rouge operates seasonal non-stop service between Vancouver and Puerto Vallarta
  • Flights operate twice weekly, on Tuesdays and Fridays
  • Flights are operated by Air Canada Rouge’s Boeing 767-300ER aircraft, featuring 24 Premium Rouge and 256 Economy class seats

Note: Non-stop flights are also available on Air Canada Rouge from Toronto and Montreal, and on Air Canada from Calgary.

Puerto Vallarta courtyard

Puerto Vallarta, or PVR, returns for another year as one of Air Canada’s most popular sun destinations from Vancouver. North Americans have been enjoying this vibrant gem on Mexico’s wild Pacific coast for years, eventually developing the resort district of Nuevo Vallarta and more recently, the sleepy fishing villages of Punta de Mita and Sayulita to the north.

Magnificent Bay of Banderas, on which PVR proudly sits, is Mexico’s third largest bay, and an important breeding and birthing ground for humpback whales. Surfing, golf, whale-watching and deep sea fishing are all available and popular attractions here, all bookable through your resort. Fronting the bay is the famous malecon waterfront, perfect for an early morning stroll or a late night fiesta.

Puerto Vallarta proper comes complete with a colonial plaza, cobbled streets and many shops, bars and restaurants, capturing Mexico’s commercial side in a timeless old town feel.

WINNIPEG – MONTEGO BAY

  • Air Canada operates seasonal service between Winnipeg and Montego Bay
  • Flights operate once a week on Saturdays
  • Flights are operated by Air Canada’s Airbus A320 aircraft, featuring 14 Business Class and 132 Economy class seats

Note: Non-stop flights are also available on Air Canada from Montreal, and on Air Canada Rouge from Toronto.

sandals - montego bay - jamaica - beach - couple

Even the palm trees lining the many beaches around Montego Bay seem to sway to Jamaica‘s infectious rhythm and pulse. The local smiles are welcoming and the jerk stands, delicious. Red Stripe flows freely and during your time here, not much is wrong with the world.

Montego Bay may be where you land but the entire north coast of this mountainous island screams with resort options and attractions. Bamboo raft down snaking rivers or climb Dunn’s River Falls, hand-in-hand; snorkel, scuba dive or take in an early round of golf at any of the pristine courses between Ocho Rios and Negril and you’re in for a treat.

Sandals reigns supreme but the sheer number of accommodation options here will satisfy everyone. In laid-back Negril, sit back with a Blue Mountain coffee or an Appleton’s cocktail and get ready for the prettiest sunset in the Caribbean.

TORONTO – VARADERO

  • Air Canada operates year-round service between Toronto and Varadero
  • Service increases to 11 times per week during the winter months, up from 3 times per week during the remainder of the year
  • Flights are operated by Air Canada Rouge’s Airbus A319 aircraft, featuring 12 Premium Rouge and 124 Economy class seats

Note: Non-stop flights are also available on Air Canada Rouge from Montreal, and on Air Canada from Ottawa.

varadero cuba beach

Read any recent American travel publication and you’ll surely find Cuba on top of the list of Hottest Destinations for 2017. Restrictions on U.S. travel to the formerly embargoed island nation have been eased and Cuba will undoubtedly change in the not so distant future. If you haven’t been yet or love the Cuba you know, now is the time to go.

Varadero, on Cuba’s north coast, has been a Canadian favourite for decades and it’s easy to see why. The warm Atlantic Ocean is the perfect baby blue here and Varadero’s beaches are some of the prettiest the island has to offer. Its proximity to the country’s capital, Havana, is also a major draw, with only a 1.5-hour scenic drive separating them, making day tours easy.

The warmth of the Cuban people leaves lasting impressions and many who go come back often. The island may be one of the safest in the Caribbean and is a proven winner with all types of travellers. If you’ve loved Cuba for its affordability, again, now is the time to go.
