At a news conference this morning, Calgary-based WestJet Airlines unveiled their new and much-hyped Boeing 787-900 Dreamliner, along with where Canadians can expect it to take them.
It is quite a significant day for WestJet as well as for Alberta, with WestJet becoming the first carrier to form a Dreamliner base in Calgary, and for the consumer, with new non-stop flights between Canada and Europe on a premium wide-body aircraft.
It is estimated that the investment will support 650 jobs and $100 million in economic output. The new influx of tourists coming into Calgary from these three flights can eventually bring up to 185,000 visitors to Alberta annually.
“WestJet is investing in Alberta to bring further economic growth, boost tourism to the province, and to further position our city as an international aviation hub. We are excited to bring Albertans to the world and the world to Alberta.” Ed Sims – WestJet President and CEO
WestJet will be basing their first 3 Dreamliners out of Calgary International Airport (YYC) and operating them on the following routes beginning next summer. Until then, WestJet will continue to service their Calgary – London route using their B767 aircraft.
- Calgary – London – Gatwick Airport (daily service starting April 28, 2019)
- Calgary – Paris (four times weekly starting May 17, 2019)
- Calgary – Dublin (three times weekly starting June 1, 2019)
WestJet’s Dreamliners will carry 320 guests in a three-class configuration including the airline’s newly revealed Business Class cabin, featuring 16 private pods with lie-flat seats. Guests can enjoy the convenient Dine Anytime Menu, in-flight connectivity, and direct aisle access on top of WestJet’s legendary service.
An upscale Premium Economy Class cabin was also showcased as well as an updated Economy Class, each with a more spacious seat and device charging capabilities. Throughout the interior guests can expect a rich and soothing colour palette inspired by distinctly Canadian themes.
