Have you ever dreamed of sailing the Greek Isles? Our Travel Expert Susan shares her experience on a sailing expedition through Greece with G Adventures, and why it's one of the best ways to island hop your way through this amazing country.
If you're considering a sailing trip in Greece, doing it with the small adventure tour company G Adventures is one of the best ways to do it! I sailed on a 50 foot, 8 guest sailboat and we covered a lot of ground.
Starting in Athens, we made our way to Kea, Kythnos, Paros, Naxos, La Reina and finally Mykonos. We had many stops along the way - in secluded bays for breakfast, bbq's and to see the sights.
There is nothing quite like the rush of sailing island to island at 20-30 knots; the blue sky up above and salt water below. We explored picturesque villages on the islands, drove around Naxos to see heritage sights and climbed to Zeus' cave on Mount Zas.
The locals are super friendly and welcoming, the food is great and each location more breathtaking than the last. We even saw some dolphins!
Packing for a trip like this? I recommend being prepared to wear t-shirts twice, one pair of long pants that dries quickly (as you'll be rinsing them after several dips in the ocean on the tender). Definitely a windbreaker, hat, sunscreen and sunnies. When ashore for an evening, a light dress or shorts and shirt works perfectly fine. Be prepared to do a lot of walking/hiking while ashore.
There is a ton to do and see – from wandering the markets, getting lost in the streets of Mykonos, renting scooters or ATVs to explore, and for the more adventurous a couple of decent hikes. If you're prone to seasickness, be sure to bring some Gravol as the Aegean is not the smoothest of seas. Personally, I was fine but some of my crew weren't so lucky; be sure to have a light, non-greasy breakfast on sailing days.
Life on board was awesome. Food preparation was a fun group activity, as was socializing on deck at the end of the day. Smaller quarters makes for quick camaraderie with your crew; new friends that will definitely last a lifetime.
So if you're considering sailing the greek islands, I highly recommend a G Adventures Sailing expedition.
