It’s been years in the making and I remember thinking that this could be one of the most successful routes for Air Transat, if it was to ever take off. Then came Czech Republic’s imposed visa restrictions on Canadians (to counter Canada’s then new visa requirements on visiting Czechs) and the highly anticipated route was again put on the back burner with even Czech Airlines cancelling the only direct service between the two countries. A couple of years ago however, both nations finally relaxed their visa rules and the prospect of a charter flight to the Czech capital started to heat up again.
Now, finally, Air Transat has secured a deal to fly its A330-300s seasonally, between Toronto and Prague (with a touchdown in Montreal) and the airline happily saw its inaugural, sold out flight leave Toronto last week. Operating weekly (Tuesdays) from June 17 through to October 15, Air Transat now becomes the only airline flying a direct route to one of Europe’s most beloved cities.
Since the fall of the “Iron Curtain”, Prague has become one of the most visited European cities and seems to only keep growing in popularity. Picturesque, cosmopolitan and still relatively affordable, the Bohemian gem has miraculously remained intact after the bombings of WWII destroyed most other great European cities and its stunning varied architecture ranging from Gothic and Renaissance to Art Nouveau and new, cutting edge designs remain on proud display. Add cathedrals and castles, hearty cuisine and fun beer halls, a plethora of museums and art galleries and warm, welcoming locals and you’ve described the draw of one of Eastern Europe’s most captivating destinations.
