Have you always wanted to visit Turkey? Our Travel Consultant Tiffany McLeod recently travelled there with G Adventures and shares the highlights of her trip with us:
I was lucky enough to get a chance to visit Turkey and it is one of the most amazing countries I have ever visited; so rich in culture, with amazing food and stunning architecture.
To start with, the culture was mind boggling. Turkey is referred to as “the bridge”. Depending on what part of the country you visit, you are in Asia, Europe or the Middle East. There are a bunch of different religions worshipped here, the bulk of which is Muslim. I was able to learn a lot about this religion while travelling and the ways it has shaped Turkey.
One of the most touching things I experienced here was the call to prayer. This is announced over loud speakers in each city I visited 5 times daily. It is amazing to witness the majority of a nation come together so often in worship. I also experienced the Turkish culture in the handmade products such as leather, rugs, silk items, pashminas etc. It is incredible the quality, effort and time put into these products. Amazing to witness!
The second thing that astounds is the food! There are so many different dishes and types of food, tea and desserts. Turkish people are very nourishing. I had just finished a beautiful Kebab lunch after my Turkish bath and as I walked past another kebab restaurant, the owner was on the street beckoning for people to come in and try his kebabs. I said, “I just ate but thank you”, he said “EAT AGAIN!” in a big excited voice.
I was able to visit Cappadocia and be hosted by a local woman who invited us into her home and cooked us dinner. What a spectacular experience sitting on cushions on the floor in her dining room around a huge table devouring this amazing meal. Definitely a highlight I am very grateful to have experienced.
What can I say about the different archaeological sites? Spectacular! If you have any interest in history or archaeology, GO TO TURKEY! I was floored by the vast history of Turkey and how all of the mosques, ruins, lost cities etc came to be. A highlight was seeing Ephesus. This is a whole city within some ruins. There were amphitheaters, hospitals, libraries and bath houses. It was amazing to see how people lived from the BC to now. I was also lucky enough to be able to view Cappadocia from a hot air balloon which was unbeatable. This city has been molded from erupted volcanoes and shaped over time. Breathtaking!
Needless to say, Turkey is a must see. There are some true treasures to be found not just in Istanbul, but all over Turkey. I could not be more grateful that I have had the chance to visit this beautiful country and I will definitely be back!
