More about Budapest

Budapest is famous for its classical music, Viennese and Parisian inspired architecture and its abundance of thermal hot springs, evident in the many therapeutic bathhouses around, including the Art Nouveau style Gellert Baths and the massive, 15-pool Szechenyi Baths. Religious tour stops include the Great Synagogue, the world's largest outside of New York and the neo-classical beauty of the Basilica of St. Stephen. The most visited site is the Royal Palace on the left bank and the majestic structure has been added to the UNESCO World Heritage List for its cultural and architectural significance.

Hungarians are proud of their native cuisine and Budapest has a thriving restaurant culture that includes everything from traditional to vegetarian, fusion and more recently, authentic ethnic eateries. Goulash (as a soup or stew) is as traditional as it gets and is found most anywhere, as are the paprika spiced cabbage rolls and local sausage. Food tours, dinner cruises and wineries are popular ways to sample the local dishes as well as see the sights. Hungarian wine has been gaining respect and a day out to the wine regions of Balaton or Eger, or if time restricts, a local borozo (wine pub) will showcase its new-found appeal.

As far as Western European capitals go, Budapest is on the more affordable side as well as one of the most beautiful, making it a popular stop on many European itineraries.
