Get our take on why you should visit the world's most popular tourist attractions, including Angkor Wat, Milford Sound and the Eiffel Tower.
Is that really worth it? Will that live up to the hype? Do I need to see that?
If these are the type of questions you ask yourself about the best tourist attractions in the world, you’ve come to the right place. In an age of heavily filtered travel content, it’s natural to wonder whether reality will measure up to the perfect images we see online. In some case they don’t… but in a lot more cases, they do.
The Colosseum, Taj Mahal, Great Barrier Reef and 27 other tourist attractions we’ve listed below, for instance, are as breathtaking and as awe-inspiring as you imagine.
Trust us: We’ve been making travel dreams come true for 30 years, and can say with certainty that these iconic landmarks, historic buildings, natural wonders and world-class museums will impress you.

Sydney Opera House
Location: Sydney, Australia
During construction, the design of the Sydney Opera House was scrutinized by both the Australian government and the general public. No one could understand architect Jørn Utzon’s vision or why it required so much time (and so much money) to build. But no one’s questioning it today!
While most travellers are content with only seeing the orange-inspired exterior, the interior is just as remarkable — so go ahead and join an Architectural Tour.

Eiffel Tower
Location: Paris, France
Is there anyone who doesn’t have the Eiffel Tower on their travel bucket list? The romantic, wrought-iron structure attracts millions of visitors each year and never fails to impress. And that’s true whether you pay to take the lift to the top, gaze up at it from the Field of Mars or catch a glimpse from one of many vantage points in the city.

Niagara Falls
Location: Niagara Falls, Ontario
Comprised of three roaring cascades (Horseshoe Falls, American Falls and Bridal Veil Falls), this is where nature’s power is on full display. And you can experience it in more ways than one, from observation decks and boat tours to ziplines and helicopters. Just keep in mind that not all of them will keep you dry…

Great Wall of China
Location: China
Spanning more than 21,100km between Shanhaiguan to Jiayuguan, the Great Wall of China allows you to choose your own adventure. If you stay in Beijing, for example, you’ll be within easy reach of 10 different sections.
Opt for the conveniently located Bandaling section or escape the crowds (and be treated to stunning mountain views) by making your way out to the Jinshanling section. You can’t go wrong with either… or any of the others, for that matter. This is one of those tourist attractions that looks good from all angles.
Galápagos Islands
Location: Ecuador
Wildlife enthusiasts, take note! The Galápagos Islands, situated approximately 900km off the coast of Ecuador, are home to one of the most diverse ecosystems on the planet. Here, the animal kingdom is made up of unique lizards, birds and marine mammals — and you’ll be able to get up close to a lot of them!
Take our Flightie’s word for it. Senior Digital Marketing Specialist, Kevin, visited earlier this year and was blown away by how fearless each species was around humans: “We got to go snorkelling with baby sea lions and sharks, take selfies with the northernmost penguins in the world and get up close to massive Galápagos tortoises,” he says.
La Sagrada Família
Location: Barcelona, Spain
This one-of-a-kind basilica designed by Antoni Gaudí has been under construction for more than 140 years! And you know what? It’s worth it. Even if you visit before the building is completed in 2026, you’ll be awestruck by its stunning stained-glass windows, intricate carvings, vaulted ceilings and organic forms.

Petra
Location: Jordan
We could go on and on about the historic city of Petra… but if we’re being honest, words won’t really do it justice. This incredible archaeological site in the Middle East, features rose-coloured sandstone cliffs and rock-cut architecture that date all the way back to 1st century BCE.
The Treasury tends to get all the Instagram glory but is far from being the only structure that will amaze you. Make sure to leave room in your itinerary to thoroughly explore the Al-Siq passage, Colonnaded Street, Royal Tombs, High Place of Sacrifice and other sites. You won’t regret it!

Gardens by the Bay
Location: Singapore
Natural beauty abounds at Gardens by the Bay. This sprawling urban park in the Central Area of Singapore entices travellers of all ages with its conservatories, greenspaces, flower gardens and interactive exhibits.
Pro tip: Stop by the Supertree Observatory after dark for a dazzling light and music show known as Garden Rhapsody. This year’s lineup includes themes like Retro Fever (read: disco), Tales of the Moon and World of Fantasy.

The Acropolis
Location: Athens, Greece
The Acropolis may overlook modern-day Athens, but it will transport you all the way back to ancient Greece. Visit the archaeological site to explore the iconic Parthenon, Temple of Athena Nike, Erechtheion and Odeon of Herodes Atticus. Then, head over to the nearby Acropolis Museum to see the unique artifacts that have been collected from the slope.
Grand Canyon National Park
Location: Arizona, United States
With its breathtaking landscapes, diverse wildlife and countless outdoor adventures, no one can say that the Grand Canyon doesn’t live up to the hype. Raft down the Colorado River, step out onto the Skywalk (a cantilevered glass bridge) or spend a night gazing up at the stars.
Bonus: It’s an easy day trip from Las Vegas and Phoenix!

Buckingham Palace
Location: London, England
If you want to step inside this royal palace, be mindful of when you visit! You can only tour the ornately decorated State Rooms in the summer (July to September) and on select dates during the winter and spring.
That said, you can also appreciate this popular tourist attraction from outside. The Changing of the Guard ceremony never disappoints.

Machu Picchu
Location: Urubamba Province, Peru
Machu Picchu is a bucket-list destination for a lot of people, and for good reason! Built by the Incas in the 15th century, this UNESCO World Heritage Site offers a surreal glimpse into the past. It’s a place filled with historical significance and stunning landscapes — and is the ultimate reward after a challenging multi-day hike.

Victoria Harbour
Location: Hong Kong
Views, views and more views! Separating Hong Kong Island from the Kowloon Peninsula, this natural harbour boasts one of the world’s most incredible skylines. See it all from the top of Victoria Peak or get a different perspective from the water — ferry and boat trips can be enjoyed throughout the day and into the evening.
Don’t miss the nightly Symphony of Lights show that brings the harbour to life with colourful lasers, interactive lights and music.

Milford Sound
Location: South Island, New Zealand
With its misty mountains, inky fjords and tumbling waterfalls, Milford Sound is just as magical as it appears to be in photos — in fact, even more so! And that’s true whether you experience it from the water or the sky. Scenic cruises and flights are how most travellers will explore this incredible natural attraction.
Others, however, will set out on the 53km Milford Track, one of 11 Great Walks in New Zealand. It takes up to four days to complete, but the landscapes are so beautiful you’ll hardly even notice the blisters.
Central Park
Location: New York City, New York
No matter how many times you’ve seen Central Park on the big screen (it’s featured in hundreds of movies and TV shows), experiencing it in real life will bring you all kinds of joy. Take in the panoramic views from Belvedere Castle, wander through the Strawberry Fields, ice skate at the Wollman rink or go for a horse-drawn carriage ride — this urban oasis is alive with activity throughout every season.

Burj Khalifa
Location: Dubai, United Arab Emirates
With a total height of 2716ft, the Burj Khalif towers (literally) over the futuristic city of Dubai. Unsurprisingly, there are endless ways to experience this cutting-edge tourist attraction from the inside out, from sky-high observation decks, sleek lounges and fine dining restaurants to tranquil wellness facilities.
Neuschwanstein Castle
Location: Schwangau, Germany
Have you always wanted to know how a Disney Princess lives? You can find out at Neuschwanstein Castle. This real-life palace is what inspired the look of the Sleeping Beauty Castle at Walt Disney World Resort in Florida.
Whether you’re exploring the inside or admiring it from afar, this storybook wonder will completely capture your imagination. The surrounding mountains are beautiful, too.

Christ the Redeemer
Location: Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
Another one of South America’s UNESCO World Heritage Sites! Standing atop Corcovado Mountain in Tijuca National Park, this massive Art Deco-style statue of Jesus Christ is a symbol of peace, hope and hospitality. No wonder (pun very much intended) that it’s also one of the New Seven Wonders of the World.

Mount Fuji
Location: Honshu, Japan
Most mountains are described as rugged but not Mount Fuji. Japan’s tallest peak has a symmetrical cone shape. It’s beautiful and graceful — and so much more than just a hill to climb (although it can be that, too). For centuries, artists, writers, poets and Buddhist have turned to the snow-capped peak as a source of inspiration. One glance and you’ll immediately understand why.
Our recommendation? Stay at a hotel that offers unparalleled views of the majestic volcano.
Great Pyramid of Giza
Location: Giza, Egypt
As the only remaining structure from the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, the Great Pyramid of Giza is an absolute must-visit for history buffs, archaeologists and sightseers alike. Marvel at the sheer size of the pyramid from the back of a camel or step inside to wander through the narrow corridors that lead to the king’s burial chamber — just keep in mind that the latter isn’t recommended for those with claustrophobia.

Golden Gate Bridge
Location: San Francisco, California
When the Golden Gate Bridge was erected in 1937, it was the longest suspension bridge in the world — and therefore quickly earned the title of “architectural marvel”. Whether you visit to appreciate the engineering or to experience some Full House nostalgia, you won't be disappointed.
(🎶 What ever happened to predictability? The milk man, the paper boy, the evening TV?)

Forbidden City
Location: Beijing, China
Despite what the name might suggest, you are allowed to visit this imperial palace complex in the heart of Beijing. Once the home of Ming and Qing dynasty emperors, it now beckons travellers with its museum exhibits, art galleries, ceremonial halls and vast courtyards.
You could easily spend multiple days exploring the grounds, learning about China’s rich history and just generally being awestruck by its extensive collection of artefacts. Good thing it’s in such a central location!
The Colosseum
Location: Rome, Italy
Still thinking about the Roman Empire? We don’t blame you! This ancient civilization is the reason we have tourist attractions like the Colosseum. While you can explore on your own, we recommend hooking up with a local tour guide so that you can get the stories behind the archways, columns and tunnels — and in many cases, skip-the-line access!
Great Barrier Reef
Location: Queensland, Australia
Not all of the world’s top tourist attractions can be found above the surface. At the Great Barrier Reef, you’re invited to dive into an underwater fantasy land filled with stunning coral formations and colourful marine life — including six species of turtles! Take your pick from swimming, snorkelling, scuba diving and even ScubaDoo-ing (underwater scootering).

Table Mountain
Location: Cape Town, South Africa
Don’t let Table Mountain’s flat top fool you! A lot of the hiking trails that lead to the peak are steep, and some even require the help of a guide. If you’re after a challenging physical activity, you won’t be disappointed — by the route or the views at the top.
Of course, you don’t have to be a superstar athlete in order to reach the summit. Many of the climbs are suitable for those with little to no hiking experience. Or you can buy yourself a ticket for the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway so that you get all of the scenery without having to put in any of the legwork.

Angkor Wat
Location: Siem Reap, Cambodia
If you have dreams of travelling around Southeast Asia, make sure Angkor Wat is on your to-do list. Despite its large size (402 acres!), this temple complex is a tranquil haven. Wake up early to watch the sun rise over the temple and then spend a few hours exploring the grounds; there are thousands of statues and carvings to discover here.
Berlin Wall
Location: Berlin, Germany
No tourist attraction puts cultural history on display quite like the Berlin Wall. While it was once a symbol of a divided world, today it’s a powerful open-air gallery that tells stories of resilience and unity. Stroll amongst the East Side Gallery’s moving and memorable murals, visit the Checkpoint Charlie crossing for a glimpse into the Cold War-era drama and more.

Chichén Itzá
Location: Yucatán Peninsula, Mexico
There’s so much more to Mexico than tacos, margaritas and sparkling swimming pools! Exhibit A: Chichén Itzá. This former Mayan city has immense cultural significance and a fascinating history — which you can uncover at the El Castillo pyramid, ancient ball courts and sacred cenotes.

Taj Mahal
Location: Agra, India
The Taj Mahal is worth visiting again and again and again, especially if you plan to stop by at various times of the day. The mausoleum’s marble façade seems to change colour with the light; it’s a pale pink in the morning, a gleaming white in the afternoon and a stunning shade of gold at dusk.
And don’t even get us started on the details! Get up close and you’ll discover precious stone inlays, calligraphy, lattice screens, floral carvings and other intricate design elements. The craftmanship is unlike anything else.

Cappadocia
Location: Turkey
Cappadocia looks as if it’s been plucked straight out of a fantasy world. Here, you’ll find fairy chimneys, ancient cave dwelling and skies filled with hot air balloons. Float above the otherworldly rock formations, explore underground cities and sip Turkish coffee in a cozy café. This destination offers a dreamy blend of history, adventure and jaw-dropping scenery you need to see to believe.
