More about Marrakech
Marrakech's moniker, the "Red City" is from the ruby-like glow created by sunlight cast against its ochre and pink-tinted architecture. The spectrum continues with oranges and yellows of exotic spice markets, the joyous greens of Jardin Majorelle (a gift to the city from Yves St. Laurent), cerulean sky and electric indigoes leaping from textiles. The vibrancy of it almost requires sunglasses (which you'll need as protection from the bright sunlight and blowing sands of the Sahara Desert.)
Situated at the foothills of the snow-peaked Atlas Mountains, and a few hours from the Sahara, Marrakech's climate is hot and arid. Winters are damp and mild, summers dry and scorching. The best time to travel to Marrakech is spring, since temperatures are in the agreeable low 20s in March, soaring to the late 20s by May.
Marrakesh is divided into two parts: Medina, the historic city, and Gueliz or Ville Nouvelle, the modern district. Medina is an elaborate tangle of passageways peppered with traditional shops, with a timeless character that one might envision when Marrakech is mentioned. Minarets from Medina's antique mosques are a distinct feature of the old city. The new district is home to brand name stores, fast food chains and modern restaurants, each with its own Moroccan flavour and flair.
Casablanca, the country's largest city, is a two and a half hour drive from Marrakech. Located on the ocean, this port city is associated with old Hollywood romance for a reason, and makes a good day trip or overnight sojourn to enjoy an ocean breeze and beach time.
If you're looking to check Africa off your bucket list, consider the North African country of Morocco, which must include a visit to magical Marrakech.
